NMC invites application for new medical colleges

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has reintroduced the application window for establishing fresh medical colleges and expanding MBBS seats, reversing the earlier mandate that capped the number of medical seats per state.
This decision enables stakeholders to submit applications for new medical college setups and the augmentation of MBBS seats through the official website, i.e., nmc.org.in, until November 26, 2023.
OVERCOMING POPULATION-SEAT RATIO BARRIER
The NMC’s decision to reopen the application process comes in response to the prior restriction that limited colleges and institutions from applying for new medical colleges or expanding MBBS seats. Specifically, the limitation stemmed from the requirement to maintain a ratio of 100 MBBS seats for every 10 lakh population.
However, colleges and institutions that were previously ineligible due to this population-seat ratio can now avail themselves of the reopened window.
It’s important to note that these institutions must meet additional conditions set forth by the commission to qualify for the application submission.
Underlining this development, the Undergraduate Medical Education Board of the National Medical Commission (NMC) revisited the stipulations concerning the ratio of 100 MBBS seats for every 10 lakh population in states.
RESUMING MEDICAL EDUCATION INITIATIVES
Consequently, the NMC has reopened its portal to facilitate the establishment of new medical colleges and the expansion of MBBS seats in existing medical institutions.
This move reinstates opportunities for colleges and institutions previously impeded by the population-seat ratio, allowing them to apply for the upcoming academic years’ initiatives in medical education and infrastructure expansion.
