Police have made an arrest in connection to Ottawa’s first homicide of 2024, though the man wanted for first-degree murder remains at large.
The Ottawa Police Service said it arrested Sharmaake Abdi Hire, 28, of Ottawa, on Friday evening. The man appeared in court on Saturday and remains in custody. He faces charges of accessory after the fact to murder.

Meanwhile, police say Gibriil Bakal, 29, of Edmonton, remains at large. He is accused of first-degree murder in the death of Jama Roble, who died in hospital on Feb. 8 from injuries he received after being shot mid-afternoon on Jan. 29.

Police describe Bakal as Black, standing six feet one inch tall and weighing about 190 pounds.
