OPS busca la voz de adolescentes y jóvenes para abordar la crisis de salud mental en las Américas

Washington, DC, 17 de julio de 2023 (OPS)- La Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) anunció hoy un concurso dirigido a adolescentes y jóvenes de 10 a 24 años, con el objetivo de abordar la crisis de salud mental en las Américas.

A través de medios artísticos como pintura, dibujo, ilustración, cómics, poesía, cuentos, videos y canciones, el concurso Voces Jóvenes busca recopilar sus opiniones para informar e inspirar a los responsables políticos y tomadores de decisiones, con el fin de mejorar la atención de la salud mental de los adolescentes y jóvenes a través de soluciones innovadoras y eficaces.

“El propósito de este concurso es fomentar la participación activa de los jóvenes y adolescentes en el ámbito de la salud mental, brindando un espacio donde sus voces y perspectivas sean escuchadas. Esto nos permitirá diseñar estrategias que aborden de manera diferenciada las necesidades de este grupo demográfico”, explicó la doctora Sonja Caffe, asesora regional de salud del adolescente de la OPS.

Según el reciente informe Una nueva agenda para la salud mental en las Américas de la OPS, los problemas de salud mental en la población joven pueden tener consecuencias negativas en diferentes aspectos como las relaciones interpersonales, el rendimiento escolar y la productividad laboral a largo plazo. La autolesión es la tercera causa principal de mortalidad adolescente a nivel regional, según los últimos datos disponibles de la OMS.

En este contexto, el documento de la OPS enfatiza la importancia de que los países inviertan en la promoción y prevención de la salud mental a lo largo de toda la vida, teniendo en cuenta que la crisis desatada por la COVID-19 agravó los factores de riesgo para el bienestar psicológico, especialmente entre los jóvenes.

El concurso se encuentra abierto a adolescentes y jóvenes de todos los países de la región de las Américas. Las propuestas ganadoras serán anunciadas en la página web de la OPS y recibirán premios en efectivo de entre 150 y 500 dólares. La fecha límite para participar es el 17 de agosto de 2023, 12hrs (ET) de Washington DC.
