OPS insta a fortalecer medidas preventivas contra el dengue en Centroamérica, México y el Caribe

Washington, DC, 24 de mayo de 2024 (OPS)- Ante el aumento de casos de dengue en el hemisferio sur y el inicio de la temporada de mayor transmisión de esta enfermedad en el hemisferio norte, la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) insta a los países de Centroamérica, México y el Caribe a fortalecer las medidas preventivas.

En una alerta epidemiológica emitida hoy, la OPS enfatiza la importancia de reforzar las acciones de vigilancia, diagnóstico y control vectorial, así como de preparar los servicios de salud para el manejo adecuado de pacientes. Esto con el objetivo de prevenir complicaciones y evitar la posible saturación de los servicios de salud.

El dengue es una enfermedad viral transmitida por mosquitos que, en la mayoría de los casos, no presenta síntomas. Sin embargo, cuando se manifiestan, estos suelen incluir fiebre alta, dolores de cabeza y corporales, náuseas y erupciones cutáneas. Aunque la mayoría se recupera en una o dos semanas, algunos pueden desarrollar formas graves que requieren hospitalización, pudiendo llegar a ser fatal cuando no es tratado oportuna y adecuadamente.

Hasta mediados de mayo de 2024, la región de las Américas ha informado más de 8,1 millones de casos de dengue, lo que representa 3,3 veces más casos que en el mismo período del año anterior. Brasil, Argentina, Paraguay, Perú, Colombia y México son los países con más casos reportados. Además, se han registrado más de 3.600 muertes relacionadas con el dengue en toda la región.

Por su parte, México ha notificado más de 65.000 casos de dengue, Guatemala más de 12.000, Honduras más de 20.000 y Panamá más de 5.800, todos con entre 2,5 y casi seis veces más casos que en el mismo período de 2023. En el Caribe, los países y territorios han notificado más de 21.000 casos, es decir, 5,7 más casos que durante el mismo lapso del año anterior.

Ante este incremento regional de casos de dengue sin precedentes, la OPS insta a intensificar los esfuerzos para combatir al mosquito vector y a esta enfermedad, para la cual no existe un tratamiento específico.

La OPS enfatiza la importancia del diagnóstico clínico oportuno, la identificación temprana de signos de alarma y el manejo adecuado de los pacientes para evitar casos graves y defunciones. Llama a los trabajadores de la salud a proporcionar una guía clara a los pacientes y sus familias para monitorear los signos de alarma y buscar atención médica inmediata en caso de presentarse alguno de estos signos.

La Organización ofrece recursos y capacitación a través de su curso virtual de dengue, disponible gratuitamente en su Campus Virtual de Salud Pública.

La OPS recomienda a los Estados Miembros hacer un uso efectivo de los recursos disponibles para prevenir y/o controlar la infestación de vectores en zonas afectadas y en los servicios de salud.

Además, recuerda a la población la importancia de eliminar los criaderos de mosquitos en sus hogares y alrededores, y de tomar precauciones para evitar picaduras, como el uso de repelente y ropa que cubra brazos y piernas.

La OPS reitera su compromiso de apoyar a los países en la implementación de medidas efectivas en la lucha contra el dengue y otras enfermedades transmitidas por mosquitos, y continuará monitoreando la situación y proporcionando orientación técnica a los países afectados.
