OPS llama a la acción colectiva ante el aumento récord de casos de dengue en las Américas

Washington, DC, 28 de marzo de 2024 (OPS)- La Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) alertó hoy sobre el aumento de casos de dengue en las Américas. Hasta el 26 de marzo de 2024, se registraron más de 3,5 millones de casos y más de 1.000 muertes en la región.

“Esto es motivo de preocupación, ya que representa tres veces más casos que los reportados para esta misma fecha en 2023, año récord con más de 4,5 millones de casos notificados en la región”, afirmó el Director de la OPS, Jarbas Barbosa, durante una rueda de prensa.

Si bien el dengue está en aumento en toda América Latina y el Caribe, los países más afectados son Brasil (83%), Paraguay (5,3%) y Argentina (3,7%), que concentran el 92% de los casos y el 87% de las muertes. Este incremento se debe a la temporada de mayor transmisión en el hemisferio sur, donde la propagación del mosquito Aedes aegypti es más alta debido al clima cálido y lluvioso.

Sin embargo, advirtió el doctor Barbosa, “también vemos un aumento en países como Barbados, Costa Rica, Guadalupe, Guatemala, Martinica y México, donde la transmisión suele ser más alta en la segunda mitad del año”.

El Director de la OPS señaló que la presencia del mosquito vector y de casos se está extendiendo a nuevas áreas geográficas, lo que plantea la preocupación de que algunos países no estén preparados para enfrentar un aumento en la transmisión.

Varios factores ambientales y sociales propician la propagación del dengue, entre ellos, el aumento de las temperaturas y los eventos climáticos extremos, además del fenómeno de El Niño. También el crecimiento poblacional rápido y la urbanización no planificada juegan un papel crucial: condiciones de vivienda precarias y servicios de agua y saneamiento insuficientes crean criaderos en objetos desechados y en otros utilizados para acumular agua.

La Organización mantiene una vigilancia rigurosa del dengue en la región y ha emitido nueve alertas epidemiológicas en los últimos 12 meses, proporcionando orientación esencial a los Estados Miembros para la prevención y el control de la enfermedad.

La presencia de los cuatro serotipos de dengue en la región aumenta el riesgo de epidemias y formas graves de la enfermedad dada la circulación simultánea de dos o más serotipos, algo que ocurre en 21 países y territorios de las Américas.

El doctor Barbosa subrayó la importancia de tomar acciones para prevenir y controlar la transmisión del dengue y evitar muertes, destacando que “a pesar del aumento récord de casos en 2023, la tasa de letalidad por dengue en la región se mantuvo por debajo del 0,05%”. Este logro, señaló, “es muy alentador, considerando los picos de casos observados desde entonces”.

Este éxito ha sido posible gracias al apoyo continuo de la OPS a los países desde 2010, a través de una estrategia integral para controlar el dengue y otras enfermedades transmitidas por mosquitos. Esta estrategia incluye el fortalecimiento de la vigilancia, el diagnóstico temprano y el tratamiento oportuno, lo que ha contribuido significativamente a salvar miles de vidas.

El Director de la OPS hizo un llamado a la acción: instó a intensificar los esfuerzos para eliminar los criaderos de mosquitos y protegerse de las picaduras, a preparar a los servicios de salud para el diagnóstico temprano y el manejo clínico oportuno, y a educar a la población sobre los síntomas del dengue para que busquen atención médica de inmediato.

“Hacer frente al dengue es tarea de todos los sectores de la sociedad”, sostuvo el doctor Barbosa y pidió “involucrar a las comunidades para tener éxito en nuestros esfuerzos”.
