Washington, D.C., 10 de mayo de 2024 (OPS) – La Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) emitió una alerta epidemiológica instando a los países del hemisferio sur a prepararse para un posible aumento simultáneo de influenza y otros virus respiratorios, y el dengue.

Con el inicio de la temporada de mayor circulación de las enfermedades respiratorias, y ante la persistente circulación del dengue en varios países, la OPS recomienda tomar medidas para fortalecer los servicios de salud. El objetivo es garantizar una atención médica adecuada a los pacientes, prevenir complicaciones y evitar la saturación de los servicios de salud.

La OPS enfatiza la importancia de planificar el uso efectivo de los recursos disponibles, incluyendo personal, equipos y suministros médicos, para enfrentar un eventual aumento simultáneo de casos de enfermedades respiratorias y dengue.

La identificación temprana y el manejo adecuado de los casos de dengue son cruciales para reducir las hospitalizaciones por dengue grave y aliviar la carga sobre los niveles de atención más complejos, que se enfocarán en atender casos graves de infecciones por virus respiratorios, señala la Organización en la alerta epidemiológica publicada esta semana.

En lo que va de 2024, el Cono Sur ha reportado más de 6,1 millones de casos sospechosos de dengue (mayoría en Brasil), lo que representa un aumento del 333% en comparación con el mismo período de 2023. La región Andina, en tanto, ha notificado más de 334.000 casos sospechosos, un 42% más que en el mismo periodo del año anterior.

Por su parte, la circulación de virus respiratorios en el Cono Sur ha variado, con un aumento de la influenza en las últimas cuatro semanas. En la subregión Andina, aunque los casos graves de infecciones respiratorias agudas se han mantenido estables y bajos, ha aumentado la proporción de casos positivos para el virus sincitial respiratorio (VSR).

La OPS también resalta la importancia de brindar orientación a los profesionales de la salud sobre el manejo clínico adecuado de casos de dengue e influenza en grupos de mayor riesgo: personas con comorbilidades y embarazadas, para el dengue; y mayores de 65 años, menores de 5 años, embarazadas, mujeres en postparto, personas con obesidad, aquellas con afecciones respiratorias crónicas subyacentes, y los inmunocomprometidos, para la influenza.
