The Ottawa Humane Society has removed adoption fees for senior cats in the hope that commonly overlooked pets can find forever homes.
“Historically, older cats are the pets who have the hardest time finding their perfect match,” Carley Davidson, the humane society’s senior manager of operations, said in a news release on Friday. “We want these cats to spend their golden years with a family who loves them.”

The shelter says there are currently five cats aged six and up that are available for adoption. One has been in the shelter since January.
Davidson said senior cats might have a harder time finding homes during the upcoming “kitten season,” but adopting an older cat has benefits: senior pets are often calmer than their younger counterparts and their personalities are well-established.
