Ottawa police hate and bias crime unit charges Carleton Place man with assault

A 50-year-old man from Carleton Place has been charged with assault and criminal harassment by the Ottawa Police Service hate and bias crime unit in connection with an Oct. 18 incident in Kanata.

The suspect, who was not identified by police, was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, police said in a news release.

According to the release, the incident occurred at a gas station in the 500 block of Terry Fox Drive at approximately 6:15 a.m. on Oct. 18, when the suspect “engaged in an altercation with another client,” assaulting the victim and making antisemitic statements.

The victim received minor injuries, police said.

Anyone who witnessed the assault or has any information about it has been asked to call the Ottawa Police Service Hate Crime Unit at 613-236-1222, extension 5015. Tips may also be sent electronically to hatebiascrime@ottawapolice.ca.

Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477.

“We continue to encourage anyone who witnesses or experiences such incidents to report them to police,” the Ottawa police statement said. “We will prosecute those who commit violent offences and hate crimes to the full extent of the law.”
