Priorizar la supervivencia infantil y adolescente en las Américas con un enfoque de equidad: Director de OPS

Washington, DC, 17 de noviembre de 2023 (OPS)- Tras el impacto de la pandemia de COVID-19 en las Américas, es necesario priorizar y mejorar la supervivencia infantil y adolescente en los países de la región, señaló el Director de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS), doctor Jarbas Barbosa, haciendo hincapié en la importancia de mantener un enfoque de equidad en estos esfuerzos.

“Aún nos enfrentamos al hecho de que 13 de cada 1.000 niños nacidos en las Américas mueren antes de su quinto cumpleaños, con importantes disparidades entre diferentes países, y dentro de los mismos. Además, casi 4 de cada 100 adolescentes entre 15 y 19 años dieron a luz en el último año en nuestra región. Estas cifras no son meras estadísticas; son llamados urgentes a la acción”, enfatizó el doctor Barbosa durante su intervención en el seminario web regional Serie Lancet sobre “Optimización de la salud y el desarrollo del niño y el adolescente”.

El encuentro virtual organizado por la OPS permitió difundir y discutir los hallazgos y recomendaciones presentados en la Serie de Lancet de 2022 sobre optimización de la salud y desarrollo infantil y adolescente. Asimismo, se abordó la importancia de modelar las trayectorias de salud durante los primeros 20 años de vida, con el propósito de mejorar los resultados de salud y el bienestar general de la población.

“La inversión en las primeras dos décadas de la vida representa una oportunidad de eficacia óptima para el desarrollo humano. Los primeros años, representan una etapa crucial en el desarrollo de habilidades sociales y emocionales y es cuando el cerebro humano experimenta su mayor tasa de crecimiento y plasticidad”, resaltó el Director de la OPS.

En ese sentido, subrayó que durante este periodo pueden moldearse trayectorias en salud y desarrollo que forjan las etapas posteriores de la vida, enfatizando la necesidad de “una mayor inversión en los sistemas de salud basados en la atención primaria, que prioricen y contribuyan activamente a los resultados de salud en esta etapa crucial”.

Al concluir su intervención, el doctor Barbosa hizo un llamado a reforzar el compromiso con la salud y el desarrollo integral de nuestros niños, niñas y adolescente a fin de asegurarnos “que su camino no solo se centre en sobrevivir, sino que tengan la oportunidad para prosperar y alcanzar su máximo potencial de desarrollo”.

Durante el seminario web también participaron académicos y expertos en salud de la Escuela de Salud Pública Johns Hopkins (Estados Unidos), del Centro Internacional para la Equidad en Salud de la Universidad Federal de Pelotas (Brasil), de la Escuela de Salud Pública Harvard TH Chan (Estados Unidos), y del Hospital para Niños Enfermos de Toronto (Canadá).
