An assistant professor at a government college in Madhya Pradesh’s Betul district was brutally assaulted with a plastic pipe, sticks and chilli powder allegedly by a former student and other individuals on Friday, police said.
In a video of the incident, the assistant professor, identified as Neeraj Dhakad of Government JH College’s Sanskrit Department, can be seen sitting in a room when the accused barged in and thrashed him with sticks and plastic pipes after throwing chilli powder at him.
Upon receiving an alert about the attack, the local police reached the spot and rushed Dhakad to Betul’s District Hospital with injuries to his head, legs and hands. He was later shifted to a better medical facility in Bhopal in a serious condition.
A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against one former student, Aniket Thakur, and other unidentified men under section 307 (pertaining to attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Speaking about the attack on the media, Neerak Dhakad said, “I was sitting in a room in the college’s Sanskrit Department and discussing with students about their projects and assignments. Five students were also present in the room. Suddenly, five men barged into the room, and they threw chilli (powder) into my eyes and started thrashing me with sticks. I was unable to see anything. My glass table also broke down during the attack and I nearly went unconscious.”
On being asked about the identity of the attackers, Dhakar added, “I have seen a few of those men. They were accomplices of Annu (Aniket) Thakur… I cannot tell you about the reasons behind the attack. I was busy with my work when they thrashed me.”
Meanwhile, police have registered a case in connection with the matter. Speaking to the media, Betul’s Sub- Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDOP) Shalini Paraste said “… A few anti-social elements attacked professor Neeraj Dhakad ji at the government college with rods and pipes. He has been undergoing treatment at the District Hospital. We have filed a case under Section 307 of the IPC against one Aniket Thakur and others and attempts are being made to arrest them at the earliest.”
