India captain Rohit Sharma breathed a sigh of relief after the former champions stormed into the Super 8s after beating the USA in another low-scoring affair at the Nassau County Cricket Stadium in New York on Wednesday, June 12. Rohit conceded that India were made to work hard at the bowler-friendly venue in all their three matches — against Ireland, Pakistan, and the USA.
India became the third team after South Africa and Australia to qualify for the Super 8s. On Wednesday, India survived a challenge from a spirited USA side, chasing 111 after overcoming initial hiccups. USA threatened to post more than 110, but Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya came up with the best to limit the co-hosts. Arshdeep took 4 wickets while Hardik chipped in two wickets.
India lost Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli cheaply to Saurabh Netravalkar as the USA had the Asian giants reeling at 10 for 2. However, India huffed and puffed to 47 for 3 at the halfway mark. However, Suryakumar Yadav hit a steady fifty with solid support from Shivam Dube to help India chase down the target in 18.2 overs.
“It is a big relief, playing cricket here wasn’t easy. We had to stick through till the end in all 3 games. Will take a lot of confidence from these wins,” Rohit Sharma said.
“Knew it would be tough. Credit to us for the way we held our nerve and got that partnership. Credit to Surya and Dube for showing the maturity and taking us through,” he added.

SURYAKUMAR’S OTHER AVATAR
Rohit Sharma reserved special praise for Suryakumar Yadav, who hit fifty off 49 balls — the third slowest by balls in T20 World Cup history. It was a crucial knock from the World No. 1 T20I batter as he stitched a 72-run stand to guide India past the finish line.
“He showed he has a different game to him, that’s what you expect from experienced players. Credit to the way he stuck through today to take the game deep and win it for us,” Rohit said.
In fact, Suryakumar Yadav was only one of the five men who managed to hit a fifty at the Nassau County Cricket Ground, which hosted 8 matches in the T20 World Cup 2024. The pitch at the venue in New York came under criticism for being extremely bowler-friendly.
No team scored more than 137 in New York across 8 matches with Canada posting the total against Ireland to win by 12 runs. India’s 111 against the USA was the highest-successful chase at the venue.
Batters will be breathing a sigh of relief as the New York leg of the World Cup came to a close on Wednesday. Apart from not being conducive for strokeplay, the Nassau County Cricket Ground pitch also played up and down, posing threat to players’ safety. The 34,000-seater will be disassembled in the coming days.
