Real life soap romances from Coronation Street love triangle to secret weddings

Numerous stars of Emmerdale, Coronation Street and EastEnders have found love while on set, from Sally Carman and Joe Duttine to Charley Webb & Matthew Wolfenden

Soap stars spend a lot of time on set, so it comes as no surprise that they grow close to their co-stars with some even going on to date one another.

Romance has blossomed several times on the sets of EastEnders, Coronation Street and Emmerdale over the years, with some relationships resulting in marriage and kids, while others were short-lived.

There’s also been relationships blossom across rival soaps, such as Emmerdale’s Amy Walsh and EastEnders’ Toby-Alexander Smith, who recently tied the knot.

From Joe Swash and Kara Tointon to Ryan Thomas and Tina O’Brien, here we take a look at some of the romances to come out of soapland…

Sally Carman & Joe Duttine

Sally and Joe struck up a romance in 2018 after meeting on the set of Coronation Street. One year into their relationship they moved in together, and the following year they announced their engagement.

Sally and Joe put off their wedding initially due to the pandemic, but eventually tied the knot in 2022 before enjoying a lavish honeymoon to Italy.

Amy Walsh & Toby-Alexander Smith

Emmerdale star Amy and ex-EastEnders actor Toby-Alexander met when they both attended a Strictly Come Dancing show in 2019. Toby, who played Gray Atkins in the BBC soap, was at the show to support his co-star Emma Barton while Amy was cheering on Kelvin Fletcher.

Romance soon blossomed between the pair and they’ve gone on to welcome a daughter together, Bonnie, in December 2022 and tie the knot in a stunning ceremony in September 2023.

Lucy Benjamin & Steve McFadden

In 1999, Steve McFadden started a relationship with his EastEnders co-star Lucy Benjamin. The pair played Phil Mitchell and Louise Fowler in the hit soap. The couple parted ways in 2003 after four years of dating.

Steve and Lucy appear to be on good terms despite their romance ending, with Lucy returning to EastEnders on several occasions over the years.

Joe Swash & Kara Tointon

Joe and Kara, who played siblings Micky and Dawn Miller in EastEnders, started dating in 2008 but their romance ended in 2010.

Joe is now married to Stacey Solomon, who he shares three children with, while Kara shares two children with her ex-fiancé Marius Jensen.

Jacqueline Jossa & Tony Discipline

EastEnders co-stars Jacqueline and Tony dated after meeting on the set of the BBC One soap in 2011. The couple’s romance lasted 18 months before they decided to part ways.

Jacqueline, who played Lauren Branning in EastEnders, went on to marry ex-TOWIE favourite Dan Osborne, who she shares two daughters with.

Tina O’Brien & Bruno Langley

Tina dated Bruno when she was 17 years old after meeting on the set of Coronation Street. The pair’s characters, Sarah Platt and Todd Grimshaw, were in a relationship in the hit soap.

After a year of dating, their romance came to a natural end and Tina moved on with Ryan Thomas, who played Jason Grimshaw in Corrie – Bruno’s on-screen brother.

Tina O’Brien & Ryan Thomas

Tina began dating Ryan in 2003 and the couple went on to welcome a daughter, Scarlett, before splitting in 2009, shortly before her first birthday.

Speaking about their split, Tina told new! magazine: “He said he didn’t love me any more. He said I didn’t do it for him any more. Those were his words. I was absolutely devastated. He said he didn’t want the responsibility of a relationship with me.”

Tina is now married to Adam Crofts while Ryan is engaged to ex-TOWIE star Lucy Mecklenburgh.

Alan Halsall & Lucy-Jo Hudson

Coronation Street star Alan Halsall struck up a romance with actress Lucy-Jo Hudson, who played Katy Harris from 2002 until 2005 in Corrie, after they met on set. The couple tied the knot in 2009 and welcomed daughter Sienna-Rae in 2013.

Alan and Lucy-Jo split two years later, before going on to divorce in May 2018. Lucy-Jo has since moved on with boyfriend Lewis Divine, while Alan is now with Tisha Merry.

Nadia Sawalha & Marc Bannerman

Nadia and her EastEnders co-star Marc dated for three years after meeting on set. The pair’s characters, Annie Palmer and Gianni di Marco, were together on-screen.

Nadia is now married to TV producer Mark Adderley, who she shares two daughters with.

Charlie De Melo & Nicola Thorp

Coronation Street co-stars Charlie and Nicola started dating after meeting on set and while things initially appeared to be going well, the couple eventually parted ways in 2019.

At the time, a source told The Sun: “Nicola’s brief departure from the soap earlier this summer put a strain on their relationship, even though she’s returned to the cobbles now. They’ve decided to remain pals – although they aren’t hanging out as much platonically as they they did before they were a couple and have been tending to go to separate.”

Jeff Hordley & Zoe Henry

Emmerdale stars Jeff and Zoe met at drama school before they both joined the cast of the ITV soap, and it was love at first sight.

The couple wed in a low-key ceremony in 2003 and welcomed a daughter, Violet, in 2005, followed by a son, Stan, in 2008.

Alan Halsall & Tisha Merry

Following his split from Lucy-Jo Hudson, actor Alan is now dating former Coronation Street star Tisha Merry, who played Steph Britton.

Rob Mallard & Daniel Brocklebank

Coronation Street favourites Rob and Daniel went public with their romance back in 2017 and seemed smitten, but things weren’t meant to be and they parted ways after just two months.

A source told The Sun: “It was a lot of pressure for both of them to be working on the same show and going out – in the end something had to give. They decided to part ways a couple of weeks ago but they’re still great friends and hope to remain that way.”

Charley Webb & Matthew Wolfenden

Charley, 36, and Matthew, 43, met on the set of ITV soap Emmerdale, when Matthew joined the cast in 2006.

The actor asked Charley to marry him on Christmas Day in 2009, and the pair enjoyed a nine-year engagement before eventually tying the knot in a surprise ceremony, which they’d told guests was a 30th birthday party.

Charley and Matthew are parents to three sons – Buster, Bowie and Ace.
