As one half of YouTube’s Goal Guys, Cam Jones frequently takes on sport and fitness-related challenges. And in a recent video, he documents perhaps his mentally and physically toughest undertaking so far: learning boxer Floyd Mayweather’s most advanced jump rope routine.
On the first day of the challenge, Jones finds himself covered in whip-marks and drenched in sweat after just 10 minutes of skipping. “It quickly becomes clear that I’ve got a long and painful journey ahead of me,” he says. “Floyd Mayweather does this and makes it look like it’s nothing, so that man’s cardio must be insane.”
Jones then refocuses the next week of his training to build his cardiovascular endurance through circuits. He also breaks the routine down into different sections, including boxer steps, cris-crosses, and side swings, and the more difficult crossed double-unders and running crosses.
“With each practice session, I notice my coordination with the rope gets better and some of the old tricks I used to know come back,” he says. “I also incorporate some high-intensity interval training to help improve my cardio.”
Despite originally setting himself a target of mastering the routine in just 50 days, Jones struggles to execute the crosses, and as he passes the deadline and the weeks tick by, he grows increasingly despondent.
“It’s like I’m hitting my head against the wall over and over again,” he says, “and for what?”
However, a minor breakthrough occurs on Day 87, when Jones tries using a shorter rope, and he finally succeeds in performing successive crosses. “That feeling of progress and improving drives me to work even harder,” he comments.
Finally, 137 days after first commencing this challenge, Jones is able to perform the entire routine from start to finish
“I’m so tired, my shins hurt, my shoulders hurt, my wrists hurt, but I did it!” He says. “I genuinely feel like jump rope is the most underrated exercise out there, and it goes beyond just an intense workout. I’ve personally noticed improvement in my foot speed and agility when I’m playing sports, it’s improved my coordination, and it’s helped me become a mentally stronger and more resilient person.”
