Jo Malone London, known for creating some of the most coveted fragrances in the perfume world, has a new scent that’s quickly becoming my favourite.
As a beauty editor, I’ve tried most of their perfumes, and usually lean towards warm, cosy, subtle fragrances with notes like salt, musk, vanilla and woods. My previous Jo Malone favourites include Wood Sage & Sea Salt and Myrrh & Tonka. Typically, I avoid anything too floral – until now.
Earlier this year, Jo Malone expanded its Cologne Intense collection with the Red Hibiscus fragrance. Priced at £106 for 50ml and £150 for 100ml bottles, I initially dismissed it as not my cup of tea.
But after just one spritz, I’m hooked
With notes of mandarin, red hibiscus and vanilla
(Image: LookFantastic)
Pros
Strong vanilla base notes Lasts well on the skin Beautiful bottle
Cons
Expensive Some call it “too powdery”
Described as being inspired by ‘a rare and vivid flower in a tropical forest’, the key notes in this scent are mandarin, red hibiscus and vanilla, reports the Mirror. To me, it’s less floral than its name suggests, with the vanilla note dominating to create a warm, summery, almost sun cream-like scent, with very subtle hints of florals and citrus.
I’d categorise it as a ‘solar scent’, which is currently trending, and it’s been my go-to this summer.
It’s also received plenty of praise from shoppers, with some comparing it to another famous fragrance brand:.
“Lovely scent, a less in your face version of YSL Libre… Well done cologne,” penned one satisfied customer, while another shared, “It has a similarity to YSL’s Black Opium but it has a softer richer scent. You smell expensive, like a lady who does nothing but shop and do brunch when you wear this,” a description we absolutely adore.
Warm, sensual and exotic

Jo Malone London Red Hibiscus Cologne Intense, from £112 from LookFantastic
“I feel so powerful and like I’m THAT girl when i wear this! Bought the big one straight away,” gushed a third thrilled shopper.
Jo Malone Red Hibiscus is up for grabs from retailers such as LookFantastic and John Lewis, as well as Jo Malone’s own website.
If you’re on the hunt for another solar scent suggestion that won’t break the bank, I also adore Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess Nuit, currently slashed to £56, while Tom Ford Soleil Blanc Eau de Parfum is another crowd-pleaser (and also currently on sale).
