The crash occurred at about 1:30 p.m. on the westbound portion of the highway near Jeanne d’Arc Boulevard, west of Place d’Orléans shopping centre.
The men in the truck were trapped, and the generator fell over and spilled oil onto the road surface.
Ottawa Fire Services stabilized the vehicle and used specialized equipment to extricate the individuals: one at 2:08 p.m. and the other at 2:10.
Both men were listed in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, an Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesperson said.
Firefighters used “a large amount” of absorbent material to clean up oil and gas spills from the highway, a news release said.
A massive traffic jam resulted in the area, which was already affected by lane reductions due to Stage 2 LRT construction. Westbound vehicles were forced to exit Highway 174 at Champlain Street, near the shopping centre, and take a detour along St-Joseph Boulevard before re-entering the highway at Orléans Boulevard.
The Ottawa Police Service posted online that the area had been cleared by about 4 p.m.
