V Cumbre Mundial de Salud Mental: Director de la OPS urge a garantizar el acceso a servicios y atención, sin estigma ni discriminación

Buenos Aires, 5 de octubre de 2023 (OPS/OMS)- “Debemos garantizar que todas las personas tengan acceso a servicios y atención de salud mental de calidad, basados en derechos humanos y libres de estigma y discriminación. Y el suicidio debe abordarse urgentemente”, instó hoy el Director de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS), Jarbas Barbosa, durante la inauguración en la ciudad de Buenos Aires de la 5ta Cumbre Mundial de Salud Mental, la primera que se lleva a cabo en la región de las Américas.

Ese objetivo “requiere de alianzas multisectoriales y un aumento de la inversión, pero también, y al ser una cuestión transversal a todos los sectores sanitarios y no sanitarios; debe integrarse en todas las políticas para reforzar eficazmente la promoción, prevención y atención de la salud mental”, consideró el Director de la OPS.

Acompañado por el presidente de Argentina, Alberto Fernández, la ministra de Salud, Carla Vizzotti; y el director general del Comité Internacional de la Cruz Roja, Robert Mardini, el doctor Barbosa advirtió que la pandemia de COVID-19, las crisis humanitarias, el cambio climático, los conflictos, la violencia y las crecientes desigualdades tienen un impacto en la salud mental.

También estuvieron presentes a través de videos el director general de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, y la directora ejecutiva de UNICEF, Catherine Russel.

Durante la inauguración de la cumbre, el Presidente Fernández señaló que la salud mental es un tema creciente, pero que “sigue siendo tabú” en la sociedad por lo cual “poner atención en la salud mental es imperioso y necesario”.

En cuanto a la situación en las Américas, el Director de la OPS indicó que la región “experimenta una enorme carga de años de vida ajustados por discapacidad debido a condiciones de salud mental, y es la única en el mundo donde la tasa de suicidios ha aumentado en las últimas dos décadas”.

A esto se le suma que “muchas personas que viven con condiciones de salud mental, particularmente aquellas en situaciones de vulnerabilidad, carecen de acceso a la atención necesaria en sus comunidades y están sujetas a estigma, discriminación y marginación”.  Ante esta situación, la región encaró una reforma con “la reorganización en muchos países de sus servicios de salud mental hacia la atención basada en la comunidad”.

Al finalizar su exposición, el doctor Barbosa manifestó sus expectativas para la cumbre en la que surjan “debates productivos y recomendaciones concretas que pongan de relieve el camino a seguir y oportunidades nuevas y reforzadas de colaboración mundial en esta cuestión fundamental de salud y desarrollo”.
