Ontario’s police watchdog agency has terminated its investigation of a March incident that resulted in a broken right heel for a 27-year-old man during his arrest by the Ottawa Police Service.

In a decision posted online Tuesday, the Special Investigations Unit said director Joseph Martino had ended the probe after determining it was evident that the officers at the scene did nothing to cause the man’s injury.

Based on the SIU’s preliminary inquiries, the posted report said, officers went to an apartment on Beech Street on March 3 to arrest the man as he was wanted by police. The man attempted to flee by climbing onto a window ledge and jumping several metres to the ground. The man then tried to run, but made it only a short distance before he felt pain in his right foot and surrendered. The man was then taken to hospital by police.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police officers, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or discharge of a firearm at a person.
