Nestled in the middle of the Devonshire countryside, these treetop lodges are a sight to behold and will give you that feeling of true escapism. Dittisham Hideaway is a collection of treehouses, shepherd’s lodges and one original American Airstream located on nine acres of countryside just outside Dartmouth.
We were staying in Pheasant, one of four treehouses named after woodland birds. After parking, we took our electric wheelbarrow full of our bags up the little paths leading to our new home for the next two nights.
Warning – make sure to pack your wellies as this is countryside living at its best! When we got to the lodge, we opened a little wooden gate and walked onto the wooden decking that wrapped around the dome-shaped building.

From the deck, you get extraordinary views over the countryside, with the only sounds that of the gushing stream below and the birds chirping in the trees. You can spend hours out here enjoying these views, with a hammock to lounge in, games to play (including a giant chess board), a BBQ to cook on and the best bit – a wood-fired hot tub!
Inside, you’ll find a modern little kitchen, a living area, master bedroom and a second smaller room for the kids. It’s cosy, full of fun nooks and hiding places and you instantly feel right at home.
We also couldn’t get enough of the glass dome ceiling. Lying back on the sofa, you can see and hear the rain hitting the glass – utter bliss!
The Treehouse interior is breathtaking
Dittisham is a stunning little fishing village on the River Dart, just a short five-minute drive from the treehouses. And you can’t go there without planning on doing a bit of crabbing!
We popped into the village shop and bought our son a bucket and some bacon (who knew crabs love bacon?) and headed to the pontoon to catch some new friends. And boy, we caught a lot!
Off the pontoon, you can also catch water taxis over the river to Agatha Christie’s holiday home, which is open for public tours around the grounds and the house. Another water taxi will take you to Dartmouth, where you can stop by the castle.

Remember to pack your walking boots. There are plenty of walking routes around the Dittisham Hideaway – all nicely mapped out for you in your welcome book.
On arrival at the Hideaway, the staff provide a gorgeous welcome pack with breakfast goodies, tea and coffee plus a bottle of wine. But if you fancy venturing out to eat, then try the famous Ferry Boat Inn.
They serve delicious wood-fired pizzas with extraordinary toppings. We went for the “Agatha Christie” with prosciutto, goat’s cheese and red onion.

Another must when you’re in the West Country is a visit to a local ice-cream shop. We headed to the Salcombe Dairy in Dartmouth and tucked into a delicious treat. Just watch out for those seagulls!
How to book: We stayed in Pheasant, a dog friendly treehouse that sleeps two adults and up to three children. Low season starts from £275 a night and high season starts from £358. To book visit Dittisham Hideaway.
