Haryana chief of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) Nafe Singh Rathee was allegedly shot dead by unknown assailants in Jhajjar district on Sunday. The attackers targeted Rathee’s vehicle, resulting in gunfire, and several security personnel suffered severe injuries in the firing.
The incident took place when Rathee was travelling in an SUV and that is when the assailants, who were in another car, attacked him in Jhajjar’s Bahadurgarh town. According to sources, another party leader was killed in the attack.
INLD leader Abhay Chautala confirmed to India Today TV that Rathee was shot dead in Jhajjar district.
Even former Haryana Chief Minister and Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda condemned the attack and slammed the Haryana government over the same.
“The news of INLD State President Shri Nafe Singh Rathi being shot dead in Haryana is very sad. This reflects the law and order of the state. This incident made it clear that law and order has become bankrupt. Today no one is feeling safe in the state,” Hooda said.
WHO IS NAFE SINGH RATHEE?
Nafe Singh Rathee was a former MLA from Bahadurgarh and served as INLD chief for two terms. He was also the President of ex-MLA Association of Haryana.
The 70-year-old politician had been receiving death threats over the past few days, an INLD leader told news agency PTI.
He also accused the Haryana government of failing to provide Rathee with security despite there being a threat to his life, and demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister and the Home Minister.
A prominent Jat leader hailing from Jatwada Bahadurgarh in Haryana’s Jhajjar district, Nafe Singh Rathee had a significant political career and played a pivotal role in Haryana’s legislative landscape.
Rathee served as a Member of the 9th and 10th Haryana Legislative Assembly, representing the Bahadurgarh constituency.
His political journey began in 1996 when he was elected as an MLA on the Samata Party’s ticket. Subsequently, in 2000, Rathee secured victory once again, this time on the INLD’s ticket.
Rathee also held the position of Chairman of the Bahadurgarh Municipal Council for two terms.
Notably, Rathee faced a series of criminal charges including cheating, breach of trust, forgery, and criminal conspiracy, among others.
In January 2023, the Haryana Police filed an FIR against Rathee and five others in connection with the alleged suicide of local BJP leader Jagdish Numberdar.
