X-Men ‘97’Gave Us a Comic Callback With Its Newest Villain
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

ANOTHER WEDNESDAY MEANS another episode of X-Men ’97. Marvel’s animated show is a thrilling addition to the studio’s library following a string of disappointing live-action offerings. Finally, fans are getting more of what they love from the comics transformed on screen. X-Men ’97 has all the nostalgia for fans of X-Men: The Animated Series, while still delivering a fresh take on the well-known crime-fighting team for newcomers.

While watching the show is a simple undertaking, it’s nice to know how it all relates to the source material. With each new character introduced, and each new storyline, fans both young and old are probably wondering: did that actually happen in the comics? Or is the show making it up?

Recently, the series recreated Madelyne Pryor’s introduction, cutting down her turn to villainy, and concluding her storyline in a relatively positive way. Since television can’t guarantee its storylines will go on nearly as long as those in comic books, there needs to be a quick conclusion to the stories introduced in most episodes.

That said, Episode 4 gave us a thrilling cliffhanger. And before that, X-Men ’97 introduced a new villain into the mix, one that helps serve a vital lesson to the youngest member of the team. Whether you’re a newbie to the X-Men, or a longtime comic book reader who wants a bit of a refresher, we’ve got a good summary for you.

Here’s what you should know about Mojo, Episode 4’s main villain.

Who is Mojo in X-Men ’97 Episode 4?

First introduced in 1985’s Longshot #3, Mojo is a powerful, interdimensional alien who rules Mojoworld. His goal is simple: create violent, sensational television using captive mutants. In Season 1, Episode 4 of X-Men ’97, he takes Jubilee and Roberto (who’s not yet taken on his superhero title, Sunspot) and makes them believe they’re in a video game. The only problem is if they die in the game, they die in real life.

In the comics, he’s a frustrating villain for the X-Men and other mutants, but not as formidable as, say, Magneto. Whenever Mojo shows up, he either manipulates a mutant to attack the X-Men, or messes with reality (like de-aging The Avengers or the X-Men).

David Errigo Jr. voices Mojo in Episode 4. A long-time voice actor, Errigo Jr. is known for appearing in various shows and video games (which is why it’s fitting he’d play Mojo). The actor has lent his talents to the Spider-Man 2 video game, Starfield, and most recently voiced Ferb in the rebooted version of Phineas and Ferb.
