You Won’t Sleep After Watching Longlegs

THE FILM INDUSTRY is constantly evolving. But time has proven that there are three things in movies that are, for better or for worse, forever: horror, serial killers, and Nicolas Cage. Longlegs, the new NEON film starring Cage as an absurdly-creepy serial killer and Scream Queen Maika Monroe as the FBI agent on his tail, manages to include all those buckets in one devastating, absurdly evil package. Any fans of movies like Silence of the Lambs or Se7en—mixed with a little bit of Hereditary-esque supernatural dread—will be thrilled to check this one out.

Longlegs, coming from writer/director Oz Perkins (son of Psycho’s Anthony Perkins), has also demonstrated an absolute masterclass in creepy, compelling marketing from the very start of 2024. From the film’s very first viral teaser (see below), the movie has managed to build an aura of intrigue, dread, and, yes, evil around it.

There’s a dry chilliness to everything surrounding the film that just feels a bit more realistic than your typical serial killer film—and it’s absolutely terrifying. This isn’t a horror movie like Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, or even a more recent piece like Ti West’s X films (X, Pearl, and MaXXXine); this is a movie that will sit with you and very possibly infest your dreams with darkness.

The film is now playing in theaters, and if early signs are any indication, the movie could wind up being one of the surprise hits of the summer. People love horror, the country has long been obsessed with true crime and serial killers, and Nicolas Cage is Nicolas Cage. The recipe seems strong for Longlegs to be something you’ll not only want to see and sit with, but that most of your friends will want to see—and talk about afterwards.

What is Longlegs actually about?

NEON

We’re going to say it right up front: Longlegs is best seen as blind as possible. As long as you know you’re in for a dark, dread-filled ride, you’re best off letting the story simply unfold in front of you.

That being said, we can share some basic plot details. The film follows an FBI agent named Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) who becomes obsessed with an emerging serial killer (Nicolas Cage) who simply refers to himself in his post-murder writings as Longlegs. The film rides a line of mystery, leaving it up to the viewer to decide what’s going on, and whether or not this is a typical serial killer, or if there’s something supernatural, or perhaps even satanic, happening along the way.

Additional cast members include Blair Underwood as Lee’s Jack Crawford-esque mentor figure, and Alicia Witt as Lee’s troubled mother.

How can I watch Longlegs?

NEON

Right now, Longlegs is exclusively playing in theaters near you. And we recommend going to see it on the big screen—this is the kind of movie you’re going to want to talk about, and one where immersive video and sound will greatly increase an already compelling experience.

When and where will Longlegs be available to stream?

NEON

Longlegs is opening exclusively in theaters, and, depending on box office performance—it seems like it’s going to do quite well, especially for its reportedly low budget—will stay there for a while.

After the exclusive theatrical run, the film will first be available to buy and rent on VOD, and then will eventually stream on Hulu, where all films distributed by NEON eventually do.
