Zack Snyder Says His Age Is His Biggest Motivation to Stay Fit

Zack Snyder knows what it takes to stay in shape. The Army of the Dead, Justice League, and Rebel Moon writer and director makes films with notable action stars like Dave Bautista, Jason Momoa, and Ben Affleck. And while he’s not the one starring as a superhero on-screen, he has a focused diet and workout routine to keep up with the demands of the job. At his home in Pasadena, California, Snyder gave Men’s Health a tour of his gym and fridge.

Starting with his fridge, Snyder always has a mix of fruits, vegetables, and protein on hand, including egg whites, steak, broccoli, asparagus, apples, and mangos. And of course, he has more indulgent foods for his kids, too, like a baked ziti. Snyder says his diet has improved over time due to aging. While he says it’s easy to feel invincible in your 20s and 30s, eating pizza and fried foods most nights can catch up with you.

“You can’t outrun a bad diet,” he says. So true.

But while he sticks to a fairly rigid diet, Snyder still works to fit in a more, relaxed meal from time to time. “My wife will take me to a beautiful restaurant and she’s like, ‘If you don’t eat something here, I will murder you,'” he says.

That’s when he goes for the one food he calls himself an “addict” for: carbonara.

As for his workout routine, Snyder admits he likes to train with the actors he works with so he can understand the work it takes to get the movie-star physique. But when he’s not on set filming, he keeps his own personal routine at home, in a gym he calls “the black box.” He works with fitness coach Alessandro Komadina for a full-body workout. In addition to straight-up weightlifting, Snyder also plays pickleball and badminton.

When he’s not shooting, he trains every day. Filming makes for a chaotic schedule, however, so then he’s only training for a day a week, or only on weekends. Snyder’s favorite workouts are anything to do with his biceps or triceps. “On my birthday, I mainly like to train arms as a gift to myself,” he says.

It’s a lot of work to stay dedicated to his health, but Snyder says his motivation is simple: his age. “I’m an old fart. You’ve got to train,” he says. “Making movies is pretty taxing.”
