Thirty-two road users were killed in 24 fatal crashes during the month of September, according to the Ministry of Transport’s Road Safety Unit (RSU).
This represents a 22 per cent decrease in the number of fatalities, and a 12 per cent decline in fatal crashes when compared with September, 2022.
The RSU said the projection for fatalities as at the third quarter was for a decrease of 12 per cent when compared with 2022.
It said that during the month, pedestrians accounted for nine per cent of the road users killed; private motor vehicle drivers accounted for 22 per cent; private motor vehicle passengers accounted for 16 per cent; and motorcyclists accounted for 44 per cent.
The parish of Westmoreland had the most fatalities during September, with six crash victims succumbing to their injuries. St James and St Ann came next with four fatalities each, followed by Trelawny, St Thomas and Portland with three each.
St Elizabeth and St Mary both recorded two road deaths during the month while Hanover, Kingston, Clarendon, and St Andrew each recorded a single fatality.
Overall, Westmoreland accounted for 19 per cent of all road crash victims, followed by St James and St Ann which each accounted for 13 per cent.
Males accounted for 78 per cent of the road fatalities during the month of September while females accounted for 22 per cent, the RSU said.
