The stakes are high this week as Ontario’s best young baseball players battle it out in Windsor for a shot at playing in the Little League World Series.
The best teams from different districts across the province, including the Windsor South Canadians, are in town for the little league provincial championships.
“This is a showcase of the best baseball for this age group in Ontario,” said Daniel Topp, a director of the provincial championship committee. “It’s very, very competitive. There’s a lot at stake here because the winner will go represent Ontario at the Canadians. And the winner at the Canadians goes to the Little League World Series.”

“It’s also good for the city because we have the seven teams here,” said Topp. “Each team has 12 players, so there are 84 players and their families from all over Ontario here at Veteran’s park. The city has just newly redone the diamond. It’s a beautiful facility. It’s an excellent opportunity for people to come out, enjoy a hotdog and a hamburger, and watch some high-quality youth baseball.”
Topp, whose son is on the Windsor South Canadians, said the team has a real shot at taking the trophy.
“The community has really rallied around this team,” he said. “We have over 20 sponsors. The outfield fence is full of sponsor banners. Local business has stepped up to the plate to support local baseball.”
The tournament winner will go on to the Canadian championships in Kingston at the end of July. The dominant team in Kingston will head to Pennsylvania in August for the Little League World Series, which is aired on ESPN.
