AGF risks imprisonment over Disobedience of Court Order

The Attorney General of the Federation is likely to suffer imprisonment for disobedience of court order of immediate release of ‘Zakaria Umar’ from the custody of the Federal Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Federal High Court of Nigeria, Abuja, Presided over by Honourable Justice M.O. Olajuwon, had on the 8th day of July, 2024 (having heard all parties a fundamental rights enforcement suit brought before the court by the Applicant by his lawyer ‘ Hameed Ajibola Jimoh Esq.’) directed the Federal Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, represented by the Attorney General of the Federation to immediately release the Applicant from whatever custody that the Applicant must have been kept and or detained for a period of about Ten (10) years, i.e. since 19th November, 2014, till date, in Suit No.: FHC/ABJ/CS/437/2023, BETWEEN: ZAKARIA UMAR V ATTORNEY GENERAL OF THE FEDERATION & 6 ORDS., in the said court Judgment delivered on the 8th day of July, 2024, and the Court also awarded the sum of Fifteen Million Naira (N15,000,000.00) only against the Federal Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Attorney General of the Federation having disobeyed the said order of release, the Applicant, through his lawyer ‘Hameed Ajibola Jimoh Esq.’, has issued Form 48 and served same on the Attorney General of the Federation on the 18th day of July, 2024.

Unless the Attorney General of the Federation obeys the Directive (s) contained on the Order, he will be guilty of contempt of court and will be liable to be committed to prison.
