Prince Harry suffered a personal blow this week as his elder brother, Prince William, was appointed Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps by their father, King Charles.

This move is seen as a significant slight to Harry, considering that he served with the 662 Squadron, part of the corps, in an Apache helicopter in Afghanistan in 2012.

Reports suggest that this honour would likely have been bestowed upon the Duke had he not decided to step back from his duties as a working member of the Royal Family in 2020, reports the Mirror.

However, this is far from the only loss Harry has experienced since his departure from royal life. We examine all the patronages and titles that he and his wife Meghan were required to relinquish.

Military

Harry, who served on the frontline in Afghanistan, was forced to surrender several military titles upon his exit from royal life. He no longer holds the positions of Captain General of the Royal Marines, Honorary Air Commandant of RAF Honington in Suffolk, or Honorary Commodore-in-Chief of the Royal Naval Commands’ Small Ships and Diving.

Furthermore, he is prohibited from wearing his ceremonial royal uniforms, including at his late grandmother’s funeral in September 2022. This restriction has greatly upset Harry, especially given that his uncle, Prince Andrew, is still permitted to do so.

Andrew stepped down from public duties in May 2020, and his honorary military affiliations and Royal charitable patronages were stripped by the Queen in January 2022. Despite this, he still holds the rank of Vice-Admiral and is thus permitted to wear the uniform.

Harry, having chosen to step away from his role as a working royal, was required to relinquish his military appointments, and consequently no longer holds any military rank.

Interestingly, he donned a morning suit for his father’s Coronation; royal protocol prohibits non-working members of the Royal family from wearing military uniforms at official state events.

However, the King granted his son special permission to wear his uniform while standing vigil at the late Queen’s coffin alongside William and Her Majesty’s six other grandchildren.

He is also entitled to wear his medals. Harry has been awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal, which was given to all those in active service on February 6, 2002, who had completed five years in the forces.

Additionally, he received an Afghanistan Operational Service Medal in recognition of his service at the frontline in Helmand Province.

In 2012, he was bestowed with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal to commemorate his grandmother’s 60th year on the throne. It was awarded to all members of the Armed Forces, emergency services, prison services and members of the Royal Household.

In 2022, Prince Harry was honoured with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal and also holds the KCVO Star, a recognition of his distinguished personal service to the monarch. However, despite receiving the King’s Coronation medal following his father’s ascension to the throne last May, he has notably chosen not to wear it in recent public appearances.

Sport

As a rugby enthusiast, Harry once held the patronage of the Rugby Football Union and the Rugby Football League, roles now filled by his sister-in-law, Kate Middleton. He also stepped down as patron of the London Marathon Charitable Trust.

Charity

The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, launched on Queen Elizabeth II’s 92nd birthday in 2018, initially had Harry as president and his wife Meghan as vice president following their wedding. However, both relinquished these titles after stepping back from Royal duties.

Despite this, Harry maintains several private patronages including African Parks, Dolen Cymru, the Henry van Straubenzee Memorial Fund, Invictus Games, MapAction, Rhino Conservation Botswana charity, Sentebale, and WellChild.

Meghan Markle

Meghan, who was granted two Royal patronages by the Queen after marrying Harry, also lost these following their departure from Royal life.

Meghan has been replaced by Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, as patron of The National Theatre and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. She also had to relinquish her role as vice-president of The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust.

However, she still holds two private patronages: Smart Works and animal charity Mayhew.

What else have Harry and Meghan lost?

Titles

Since stepping back from Royal duties, Harry and Meghan are no longer allowed to use their HRH titles. They retain their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles, which would require an act of parliament to be removed.

Security

The couple’s security was withdrawn when they relocated to Canada in 2020 and ceased to be working royals. Prince Harry has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with this decision, even launching legal action against the Home Office for not allowing him to fund his own police protection in the UK.

However, he lost a High Court challenge earlier this year over his security arrangements when visiting Britain.

Frogmore Cottage

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex no longer maintain an official residence in the UK. They were asked to vacate Frogmore Cottage, a Grade-II listed property on the Windsor estate, gifted to them as a wedding present by the late Queen, in early 2023.

The couple had renovated the Crown Estate-owned property at an estimated cost of £2.4m during 2018-19. Initially, the expense was covered by taxpayers via the Sovereign Grant, but was later fully reimbursed by the Duke.

Buckingham Palace reportedly instructed them to leave the property in January, shortly after Harry released his explosive memoir, Spare.

As for family ties, Harry and Meghan’s relationship with the Royal family is virtually non-existent. Since their decision to step back, they have publicly criticised both the institution and individual family members.

Their candid interview with Oprah Winfrey signalled that the Sussexes would air their grievances openly. However, it was Harry’s controversial memoir Spare that appears to have driven the final wedge between him and his Royal relatives.

With allegations of physical altercations with his brother William and labelling his father’s wife Camilla as ‘dangerous’, Harry’s relationship with his Royal kin continues to worsen, with no indication of reconciliation in sight.
