Amy Dowden ‘can’t believe this’ over defiant cancer fight moment

Amy Dowden marked many impressive milestones during her battle with cancer and other health issues over the past 12 months and now one of her groundbreaking moments has been nominated for an award. Back in December Amy, who is from Caerphilly and shot to fame on Strictly Come Dancing, appeared on the cover of Women’s Health magazine proudly displaying her bald head after she lost her hair during her chemotherapy treatment.

The memorable cover has been recognised by the PPA (Professional Publishers Association)which has nominated it for cover of the year due to its “significant societal influence highlighting the reality of fighting such a devastating disease”. Amy shared the update on her Instagram stories and wrote the she “can’t believe this” followed by two tearful emojis and a note encouraging her followers and fans to vote for the cover to win.

It was during the interview with Women’s Health that Amy admitted she was “angry” with what she was going through with her health. Amy, who also has Crohn’s disease, said: “I always say I never asked [for] this to happen to me. I’ve always worked so hard. I’ve always been a good person. I looked after myself, I’ve exercised well, haven’t smoked… I do get angry.

“I just think I’ve been dealt a difficult one… I think it’ll take a while to accept. It took me a long time to accept my Crohn’s. Until I’m back dancing and back to my normal self I don’t think I will accept it.”

In recent weeks Amy has made a TV comeback thanks to her new role as reporter on ITV’s Lorraine. And earlier this week she gave an update on our chances of seeing her on Strictly Come Dancing once more later this year.

During an interview about her support of supporting The Big Help Out, a campaign to showcase how volunteering benefits both communities and the people who take part, she said: “I’ve got amazing friends and family. The oncology unit, the nurses, the breast nurses, and also the public support has been incredible. And I think the goal and the dream to be back on the dancefloor as well because I’ve missed it so, so much.”

She added: “I’m working really, really hard and getting my body fully back in rehab and physio. I’ve got a brilliant team. So fingers crossed I’ll be back on your screens dancing later this year.”
