Autopsy: Prisoner’s death was unnatural

The death of Emmanuel Joseph—a 22-year-old man charged with attempted murder of a prison officer—has been classified as unnatural.

However, further tests will determine the exact cause of death. Emmanuel Joseph had gunshot wounds prior to his death.

The post-mortem was performed yesterday afternoon at the Forensic Science Centre in Federation Park.

Joseph, a labourer, of La Canoa Road, Santa Cruz, had been charged with the attempted murders of prison officer Steve Phipps and a 12-year-old girl.

Last Friday night, he reportedly complained of chest pains while at the Eastern Correctional and Rehabilitation Centre in Arima. He was examined by medical personnel at the facility, and then taken to the Arima Hospital.

However, he died.

Speaking briefly with the Express yesterday, Joseph’s sister Crystal said she was still trying to come to terms with the news.

She said, “We are not good right now. I don’t have any real answers. I’m not even sure what the next step is going to be. We will have to speak with our lawyer (Lemuel Murphy) and see what to do.”

Joseph was charged with two counts of shooting with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was also charged with possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition, possession of a firearm with the intent to endanger life, and possession of ammunition with the intent to endanger life.

He was charged by Sgt Brain Nixon of the North Eastern Division.

After the charges were read, Joseph was remanded into custody.

At about 7:10 a.m. on October 11, prison officer Steve Phipps was shot while waiting to pick up Deputy Prisons Commissioner Sherwin Bruce.

At the time, he was in a Toyota Fortuner SUV which was parked along Sparrow Avenue in Barataria, when a white Toyota Axio and a gold-coloured Nissan Almera pulled up next to him.

The deputy commissioner was not yet in the vehicle when the gunfire began.

Three masked men, armed with rifles and handguns, left the vehicles and ran towards the Fortuner.

Police are still searching for the two other suspects wanted in connection with the shooting.

The Express was told that arrests are imminent.
