A century by Trinidad and Tobago Under-13 captain Reyad Jerome was among the highlights of the inaugural PowerGen High Performance Academy Under-16 two-day match held recently at Syne Village Ground in Penal.
The two-day game brought together the best under-16 boys selected based on performances from the Academy’s recent four-team tournament.
Jerome, playing for PowerGen Integrity, scored 104 off 193 balls as his team posted 176 for five declared off 87.5 overs in their first innings.
Batting first, PowerGen Perseverance scored 90 in their first turn at the crease and reached 87 for four in their second innings as the game ended in a draw.
Former West Indies cricketer and two-time World Cup champion Samuel Badree, who is the chairman of the High Performance Academy, said there was an urgent need to have young players playing the longer format.
“It is absolutely critical for the young boys to get exposure to longer format cricket and to develop skills to structure a batting innings and a bowling spell without the restriction of overs,” said Badree.
“It will test their skills and powers of concentration and hopefully they understand how to construct a substantial innings and a meaningful bowling spell. This was the fundamental reason why we decided to play a two-day match,” he added.
He described the atmosphere at the game as “electric,” with enthusiastic parents cheering from the stands as Jerome hit “an exceptionally crafted” century.
PowerGen’s High Performance team coaches Arnold Bassanoo and Christopher Siew Sankar expressed pride in the team’s commitment and teamwork and shared the view that the youngsters on display are “the future of cricket” and “it’s inspiring to see them excel on this platform.”
The game was played under conditions as close as possible to a first-class match, with umpires Danesh Ramdhanie and Shaheed Allaham officiating, plus a lunch and tea break and 30 over sessions.
The tournament concluded with a closing ceremony, where players were acknowledged for their performances. Trophies and awards were distributed to recognise outstanding players in various categories.
Badree said the success of this inaugural event sets a promising precedent for future cricketing endeavours for the PowerGen High Performance Programme and the success of the inaugural two-day cricket match signals a bright future for the Under-16 players.
He expressed gratitude to Scriptx Drugs for its support of the match as well as PowerGen and all the parents and boys who were involved.
