Kwande United Peoples Organisation (KWUPO) has put out a Save Our Soul (SOS) to the state and federal governments to help them repel armed herders that constantly attack their people.
Addressing newsmen in Makurdi, yesterday, National Publicity Secretary of KWUPO, Kator Atsaga, said: “Governments at all levels must act with utmost urgency to stop the genocide in Kwande Local Council and save our people from killer herdsmen, who plan to occupy our land.
“It has become a matter of urgency for the people of Kwande Intermediate Area to cry out to the government of Benue under Rev Hyacinth Alia, the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu and the global community to come to the rescue of the people of the area, who are being killed daily in their homes and farms.”
The Kwande people appealed to the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA) to urgently intervene to cushion the effect of the humanitarian crisis caused by the herdsmen’s invasion of their community.
Atsaga lamented that the dimension the invasion had taken in recent times was of a magnitude never witnessed before, with vast communities completely sacked.
He added: “This has never been witnessed. If this shocking development is not arrested soon, the people of Kwande will be wiped out. The casualty toll is heavy. This is sad, tragic and mournful.
“In Moon Council Ward, for instance, almost all the five kindreds have been overrun.”
He appealed to Alia to strengthen his partnership and support security agencies in the state, both federal and local, to protect Kwande from the invaders.
The governor, he added, should utilise the huge resources available to his office as Security Vote to provide vehicles, communication gadgets and sundry support to security agencies to boost their capacity to combat the herdsmen.
