Passengers travelling through Birmingham Airport are facing another day of long queues outside today (June 7), with claims suggesting that two people were treated for hypothermia.
Chaos and confusion erupted at the airport as queues began to snake out of the departures doors in the early hours whilst hundreds of people waited to get inside to start their holidays. Some turned up more than three hours ahead of their flights to be prepared for the lengthy waits, only to find themselves miles away from the departures entrance.
West Midlands leaders are being urged to intervene and handle the ongoing situation following further disruption. A tweet made by @DrSimonCMP stated: “I’m typically British so not a natural complainer but this is a proper shambles @bhx_official Just treated two people for hypothermia.”

Another frustrated passenger, @BiteYourBrum tweeted: “Yeeeeah, Birmingham Airport is an absolute shambles. Glad I came three hours early now.I can hardly see departures but there’s hundreds in front of me just to get inside. Oh and if you come by monorail they’ll just send you outside to join this, btw. What fun @bhx_official”.
Author, Vanessa Heggie, expressed her concern stating: “I understand why the airport social media person has gone into broadcast-only mode rather than actually responding to everyone but the silence from (West Midlands mayor) Richard Parker, Birmingham City Council and other local bigwigs is deafening. No accountability. No-one cares.”.
When contacted about the long queues at the airport yesterday, an airport spokesperson told Birmingham Live: “We had a usual busy morning, with customers queuing in unfamiliar areas.
“The queue was long and skinny in parts however it moved quickly through the terminal. Although our new security hall is operational, we still have on-going building works on-site and are awaiting regulatory approval that will allow liquids of up to two litres to be taken through in cabin baggage.
“These building works will continue for the foreseeable future as we redevelop the airport, which is part of our planned, and previously announced, £300m investment.”
Birmingham Live has been providing updates on the situation inside the airport this morning. One passenger @Biteyourbrum said: “The queue is now snaking into 3/4 lines outside, but I’ve managed to get into the building. By arrivals M&S.
“Ok so once inside and upstairs it’s a bit speedier but not much. I got from the lifts through security and into the departure lounge in 50 minutes. So all in all that was about 1 hour 40, for anyone wondering about flying (early) from here at the moment. Peace out x.
“Side note: the way some people speak to the airport staff just doing their jobs is disgraceful. And boomers are by far the worst for it. Shouting at the same people trying to help. Behave yourselves.”
Blogger @biteyourbrum has been posting about her experience at the airport this morning. She said: “For context, these (photos show both directions) are snaking all around the building. I can hardly see Departures but there’s hundreds in front of me just to get inside.
“Oh and if you come by monorail they’ll just send you outside to join this, btw. What fun. And I cannot stress how p@@ed off people are. Relentless complaining, feel incredibly sorry for the 3 girls they have out trying to calm people down. No hyperbole, this is the worst I have ever ever seen this airport.”
