Bissell Just Recalled More Than 3 Million of Its Steam Cleaners Due to Burn Hazard

Updated: Jul. 22, 2024

Hold off on your deep-cleaning projects for now. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has shared a recall from Bissell that affects its popular Steam Shot Handheld Steam Cleaners. This recall will come as a shock to Steam Shot fans who use the steam cleaner for everything from cleaning grout to detailing car interiors.

Here’s what you need to know about the Bissell steam shot recall.

Why is Bissell recalling its steam cleaners?

The steam cleaners are too dangerous to keep using. Bissell says the recalled steam cleaners can expel hot water or steam onto people during use, posing a burn hazard. The company has already received 183 reports of hot water or steam escaping from the Steam Shot, including 157 reports of minor burn injuries. This is a disappointment, as our recent Bissell Steam Shot review was largely favorable.

What Bissell steam cleaners have been recalled?

This recall is for multiple models of the Bissell Steam Shot Handheld Steam Cleaners:

“STEAM SHOT” or “POWER STEAMER” will be printed on the side of the product
The model numbers 39N7 or 2994 will be printed on the product rating label

It looks like the recall affects all colors of the Bissell Steam Shot: green, pink, blue, orange, white, black, purple and red.

Your other Bissell products, like steam mops and handheld vacuums, are still safe to use.

How do I know if I bought a recalled Steam Shot?

via merchant

To see if your Steam Shot model is part of the recall, check the model number on the product rating label on the bottom of the product. You’re looking for model numbers 39N7 or 2994.

The recalled Steam Shot models were sold at Target, Walmart and other major chains, plus on Amazon, HSN, bissell.com and other websites. You could’ve purchased the product any time from August 2008 through May 2024.

What should I do next?

You should immediately stop using a recalled steam cleaner. Then, contact Bissell to receive either a $60 credit for a bissell.com purchase or a $40 refund. (The recalled Steam Shot models were all sold for between $35 and $40.)

To register for the recall, head to bissell.com/steamshotrecall. You’ll have to upload a photo of the steam cleaner showing the model number, then cut the cord and upload a photo of that, too.
