Blackpink Honored by U.K.’s King Charles

Girl band Blackpink have been decorated by the U.K.’s King Charles III for promoting environmental sustainability. Charles made the quartet Members of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) at Buckingham Palace in London on Wednesday.

“It is especially inspiring to see Korea’s younger generation embrace the cause,” the king said at the honors dinner. “I applaud Jennie, Ji-soo, Lisa, and Rosé, better known collectively as Blackpink, for their role in bringing the message of environmental sustainability to a global audience.”

“I can only admire how they can prioritize these vital issues, as well as being global superstars,” he added.

The MBE is the lowest distinction of the Order of the British Empire, and previous recipients include The Beatles and Adele.

In 2021, Blackpink were appointed as advocates for the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and have been promoting messages related to climate change and education. They served as ambassadors for the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) when the U.K. assumed the presidency and participated in various public service campaigns.
