The troublesome Blue Jays pitching situation got another dose of doom on Saturday when word that closer Jordan Romano is headed to the 15-day injury list for the second time this season.

After having a tough time bouncing back physically from his most recent outing on Wednesday in Chicago, Romano had an MRI on Friday night and was diagnosed with inflammation in his right elbow.
“There’s no structural injury, just inflammation,” manager John Schneider said prior to Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. “He’ll have down time from throwing for a couple of days and then we’ll go from there.
“The timeline we don’t really know yet. With treatment and medication, we’ll see how he’s doing.”
Schneider said it’s a similar injury that sideline Romano at the start of the season. In the interim, fellow right hander Yimi Garcia, who has been dominant at times, will be the prime arm to slip into Romano’s closer spot.

The issue with Romano became obvious when he wasn’t available for use in Friday’s marathon 14-inning, 5-3 victory over the Pirates.
“Definitely an opportunity for guys to step up like they did at the beginning of the year,” Schneider said of what’s next for the beleaguered reliever group. “There’s been outings where (Romano) has been in hape and pretty good and other outings where (he hasn’t.) Just who he is and how important he is to us, (the IL stint) is doing what’s right for him right now.”
To take Romano’s spot on the roster, the Jays recalled right hander Brendon Little from triple-A Buffalo.
