The Special Cell of Delhi Police late on Wednesday (May 1) registered a first information report (FIR) in connection to the bomb threat in dozens of schools in Delhi-NCR against unknown people under section 120B, 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
More than 100 schools in the capital and NCR region received bomb threat via e-mail, setting off scare and panic among students, parents, teachers, and authorities.
Acting swiftly on the bomb threats, school managements started mass evacuations, sending children back to their homes. Police, bomb squads and other emergency services rushed to all the schools which received such e-mails and carried out a detailed inspection, but didn’t find anything suspicious.
The threat was later declared a hoax as “nothing objectionable” was found during searches, the police said. Meanwhile, the Delhi government has issued a directive, urging schools to remain vigilant. the authorities asked the schools to ensure the timely monitoring of e-mails received at their official addresses.
The advisory read, “In view of the current situation wherein bomb threats were received by a few schools of Delhi in early hours of morning of 01.05.2024, it is advised that School Administrators/Managers/Heads of Government/Government Aided and Unaided Recognised Schools under the Directorate of Education, GNCT Delhi should ensure that emails/messages received on official email id of the school at any time of the day (before, during or after school hours) are checked timely.”
The advisory further stated that the school authorities should inform parents and concerned law enforcement authorities to initiate appropriate measures regarding the safety and security of the students in the event of any “impending threats or challenges, well in time”.
Delhi was gripped in panic and chaos after Mother Mary School at Mayur Vihar, Delhi Public School at Dwarka, Sanskriti School in Chanakyapuri, Delhi Public School at Vasant Kunj, Amity School in Saket and Delhi Public School (DPS) in Noida Sector 30 were among the ones that had received the bomb threat e-mails.
Noida Police said that classes were suspended in DPS, Noida and the police force has been deployed. In a brief statement, the Noida Police said, “Taking immediate cognisance of the information, checking is being done around the school by the police force. Other necessary measures are also being taken.”
