Mirvac’s decision to walk away from an agreement to develop a prime block in Brisbane’s CBD has prompted the state government to look at alternatives for the site.

Earlier this year, developer Mirvac quietly abandoned its plan to build a 37-storey tower at 200 Turbot Street, which the government had wanted to become a cornerstone of the revitalisation of the northern CBD.
A spokesman for the Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning has confirmed that talks are being held with other agencies on the best use for the site.
“The department has been investigating the best strategic use of both 200 Turbot Street and the adjoining heritage-listed [dental hospital] building at 168 Turbot Street that would align with current government priorities,” the spokesman said.
“The location within inner-Brisbane city could accommodate a wide variety of uses including commercial, residential, hotel/short-term accommodation, community, hospitality or the arts.”
The site is just outside the Roma Street Priority Development Area, set to be transformed by Queensland Investment Corporation once the Cross River Rail project is completed.
The spokesman said a preferred option for the site would eventually be recommended to the state government.
