Various business chambers have welcomed the call-out of members of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force volunteers to support the crime fight.
However, they have some concerns.
This follows a proclamation from President Christine Kangaloo on Monday calling out to duty 100 Trinidad and Tobago Volunteer Defence Force to strengthen the TTDF capabilities to support the police The proclamation went into effect on Monday and will end February 29, 2024.
CHIEF Fire Officer Arnold Bristo is distancing himself from the fiasco that saw $1 million being spent to buy 20 unusable wooden ladders for the Fire Service.
Instead, he is blaming the previous person in charge for the ladders which had to be discarded.
The Government is going back to the House of Representatives with the Integrity Testing (Polygraph bill) today because it recognises “unfortunately that some personnel in key state institutions act criminally and become criminals”, National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds said yesterday.
Shortly after the 100 volunteer members of the Defence Force were called out on Monday by the President to ensure public safety, Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley warned that “the current violent crime spree will not be tolerated”.
Rowley also advised that the State would redouble its efforts to curtail the violent crime outbursts.
Police Commissioner Erla Christopher is welcoming the 100 Defence Force (TTDF) reserve officers who have been called out to assist with law enforcement operations.
President Christine Kangaloo on Monday issued a proclamation calling out members of the volunteer Defence Force for a period of 123 days with effect from October 30, 2023, to February 29, 2024. This period will include the pre-Christmas season to the 2024 Carnival season. Carnival is scheduled to take place on February 12 and 13 . The call-out comes on the heels of this country recording eight murders in 24 hours between Sunday and Monday.
