Brown Burke condemns recent murders of women, children

People’s National Party (PNP) Chairman Dr. Angela Brown Burke is condemning the spate of murders of women over the last week.

Dr. Brown Burke describes the attacks as troubling.

In the most recent incident, a mother and daughter were shot dead at the entrance to a facility operated by the National Solid Waste Management Authority at 232 Spanish Town Road early Monday morning.

The women are said to be food vendors from Manley Meadows in East Kingston.

Dr. Brown Burke has called for the government to do more to allay mounting public concerns about murders of women and children across the island.

“There is no doubt from most Jamaicans that the government just is not on top of what is happening with crime and violence. That sense of insecurity and lack of safety in our communities, it is troubling and since we cannot sleep with our windows and doors open, what is the government doing? What is the JCF doing? Where are the resources being spent?” she questioned, citing the government’s large budgetary allocation to security.

She said changes need to be made to ensure women and children feel safe.

Dr. Brown Burke has also called for more strategic interventions to stem violence in schools which she said has become a pressing issue.

“We know that there are some disciplinary problems that need to be addressed, but we also want to make sure that they have sufficient support for the psychosocial support that is required to make sure that in our schools, we can manage some of the behaviours, so when you send your child to school, you expect them to come back home, hale, hearty and healthy.”
