Boys’ Town manager Andrew Price says his club has still not decided whether they will take up the spot in the Jamaica Football Championship (Tier II) league next season, this after the former national champions defeated the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) 6-5 on penalties in the final of the Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Championship League at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex last night.
The teams were locked at 2-2 scoreline after both full-time and extra-time.
Boys’ Town jumped into the lead after 20 minutes when Donald Walters met a perfectly weighted cross from Sebastian Laing and headed past the goalkeeper.
However, the army men were resolute and the found the equaliser 11 minutes later when Ajani Hopeton turned the ball into his own goal.
The JDF then assumed the ascendancy and in the 81st minute Kenrick Clarke hit the post with a low shot.
They eventually went ahead in the 83rd minute when Devanto Francis turned home a cross from five yards.
However, six minutes later Boys’ Town were back on even terms when Kevin Johnson was fouled in the area and Denville Watson converted from the spot to make it 2-2.
Both teams created openings to steal the win before the end of regulation time, but neither took their opportunities.
Extra-time also failed to separate the teams and penalties were required to decide the outcome.
Boys’ Town then held their nerve in the shoot-out to come away 6-5 on penalty kicks, and secure their place in the Jamaica Football Championship (Tier II) for next season.
However, Price said they will take their time to decide on the way forward.
“The fact of the matter is that Tier II is an expensive venture and we need the requisite support and sponsorship to participate
“We want to participate but it has to be for us to be sustainable throughout the competition. We have to look at all angles to see if we are able to compete and be sustainable in the competition. But at this point I can’t give a definite answer but we hope and we want to participate,” he said.
In the opening match yesterday August Town came from behind to beat Duhaney Park 2-1 for the KSAFA Major League title. Tajay McIntosh fired Duhaney Park in front after 22 minutes, but an Addon Daye own goal in the 68th minute and an 89th minute strike from David Robinson saw the Peter Davis-coached August Town to victory.
