Tremors were recorded in the Derbyshire town of Buxton on Tuesday evening as a small rumble in tectonic activity was found.
According to the British Geological Survey (BGS), the tremors were recorded at around 5.30pm around one-and-a-half miles away from Buxton town centre.
However, the quake only registered 2.5 on the Richter scale, meaning it was little more than a slight shake.
The BGS tweeted that the tremor’s depth was placed at around 1.8 miles (3km).
Taking to X, formerly Twitter, the organisation continued: “SEISMIC ALERT: BUXTON, DERBYSHIRE 2 JANUARY 2024 17:30 UTC 2.5 ML.
“The following preliminary information is available for this earthquake: LAT/LONG: 53.280° N / 1.942° W GRID REF: 403.965 kmE / 375.893 kmN DEPTH: 3.0 km MAGNITUDE: 2.5 ML LOCALITY: 2.5km north-west of Buxton.”
The Daily Mirror reported a 2.5 reading is defined as a tremor that is “usually not felt, but can be recorded by seismograph”.

A 2.5 reading appears to be nothing when compared to some of histories biggest earthquakes, including the recent one experienced on the Noto Peninsula which tragically left 48 people dead.
That quake measured 7.5.
The biggest to hit British shores notched up 6.1 on the Richter scale at Dogger Bank, in the North Sea off the Yorkshire Coast.
