Campion College is the Inter-Secondary School Association (ISSA) under-14 urban area cricket champions, following an emphatic nine-wicket win over St Catherine High at Chedwin Park on Thursday.
One of Campion’s key players was off-spinner Zachary Taylor, who picked up a remarkable seven wickets in dismissing St Catherine for 13 runs.
The lanky spinner opened the bowling along with captain Abraham Waugh, and the two destroyed their opponents, with Waugh taking three wickets.
The St Catherine scorecard looked like a telephone book, with six batters failing to trouble the score.
Taylor was mesmerising in sending down five overs and conceding just four runs whilst knocking over the stumps of six batters he dismissed.
The right-arm off-spinner was elated to put in such a performance in a big game such as a final.
“I am so appreciative, and I feel good. My teammates were very supportive and helped me along this journey today,” said Taylor.
Taylor’s seven wickets in the final meant he finished the season with 28 wickets, a far cry from his idol Nathan Lyon of Australia, who is 13 wickets shy of 500 in Test cricket.
“I really like the spinner Nathan Lyon from Australia as I like how he bowls good lines and length, and when I go out there, I go out with a goal to bowl on a good line and length, and that helps me to get my wickets at the end of the day.”
Taylor, who also represents Campion College at the under-16 level, says this past season has been his best and is looking to press on to bigger things next season.
“My dad got me into cricket and encouraged me to play. I am getting more and more into the game, and I love it. As far as I can go, I want to enhance myself in the game of cricket,” Taylor said.
