SINGAPORE: A man allegedly behind a multi-weapon attack in Commonwealth Avenue was charged on Monday (Feb 5) over the injuries sustained by one of the seven alleged victims.
Joseph Lau Jin Hua, 20, was charged in the court crime registry chambers, which is not open to the public or the media.
This usually happens when the accused person is in hospital.
Lau was handed one charge of voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapon to a person named Thurairaj Dharshana Kumar, by slashing his forearm with a “chopper knife”.
This was at about 7.05pm on Saturday at the lift lobby of Block 31, Margaret Drive, the charge sheet stated.
As a result, the victim suffered lacerations on his forearm.
Lau, a Singaporean, was ordered to be remanded at Changi Prison’s Complex Medical Centre for medical examination and will return to court on Feb 19.
According to a previous police statement, Lau allegedly attacked seven people with a knife, a chopper and his bare hands.
The alleged victims include an elderly man aged 76 and a six-year-old girl, who sustained minor injuries.
Lau had acted alone and there were no indications to suggest the incident was an act of error, the police said.
Lau was detained by five members of the public until the police arrived and arrested him at 1 Dundee Road, the address of Queens Peak condominium, about 400m away from where Lau was spotted holding a chopper and running.
Lau has no criminal records, the police said.
If convicted of voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapon, he could be jailed for up to seven years, fined, caned, or given any combination of these punishments.
