In a bid to curb two-wheeler riding without a helmet and resultant mishaps, the Odisha State Transport Authority has decided to empower the citizens to report such riders through an application named Citizen Sentinel.
Under the ‘Citizen Sentinel’ section of the mParivahan application, citizens can upload photos and videos of people riding without helmets under the ‘No Helmet Violation’ option and e-challans will be issued to the violators after verification.
The identity of the person reporting the violation will not be disclosed.
The app is developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC).
As per data, in 2022, 34% of deaths in road accidents involved two-wheelers in the state. A total of 1,695 people lost their lives and 2,615 were injured for riding without a helmet.
Additional Commissioner of the State Transport Authority, Lalmohan Sethi said, “We have developed a mobile application through which people can take pictures and record videos of traffic violators and upload them. After examining the evidence, if it is proved that the person has actually violated the law, then we will levy a fine on them.”
