Outraged Coles customers have slammed the supermarket giant for throwing out large quantities of food during a refurbishment.
Daniel Watson filmed tip bins full of perishable and non-perishable groceries destined for the dump at a Coles in Chadstone, east Melbourne, on Wednesday.
The first video, which has been viewed nearly 200,000 times, showed a skip bin full of flour, toilet paper and other toiletries sitting inside of it.
A second one was seen being poured into a garbage truck to the shock of Mr Watson.
‘Coles doing a de-fit at Chadstone. Throwing all their stock out,’ he wrote on TikTok.
Videos filmed in Coles’ Chadstone store show hundreds of products being thrown away (pictured, a skip bin full of goods)
‘No one is allowed to even take out of the bin. Dog food, boxes of soft drink, toilet paper, everything! Couldn’t this have gone to the needy?’
A second video showed another large bin full of biscuits and pet goods alongside three more tips filled to the brim with groceries.
Hundreds of commenters were left horrified by the waste and questioned why the products weren’t donated.
‘That could feed so many hungry Victorians,’ one person wrote.
‘Unbelievable, something needs to be done now. All the packaged food can be used for the homeless and all the shelters,’ another said.
‘Why not offer it to staff?,’ a third commenter said.
‘And they are worried about the small shoplifters or the capsicum being put through as an apple,’ another wrote.
Coles responded to the video in a statement to Daily Mail Australia.
Coles said it threw the products due to issues with ‘product safety and quality’ but hundreds of commenters questioned why the goods (above) weren’t donated
‘We recently paused trading at our Chadstone store due to dust from nearby construction,’ it said.
‘We have been conducting a deep clean of the store and, unfortunately due to product safety and quality, need to dispose of a number of products due to contamination from the dust.
‘Where possible, Coles always donates product that is fit for use and consumption to food rescue organisations.’
