Couple split after food fight

A Corporate Area man informed the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court that his ex-girlfriend has returned to her home in the country following an altercation between them about mackerel and rice.

Orlando Graham pleaded not guilty to unlawful wounding on Monday before Senior Parish Judge Lori-Anne Cole-Montaque. Prosecutors related that Graham was in a relationship with the complainant, who moved in with him in October. The complainant informed the accused that she only had $1,000 and bought a tin of mackerel, as well as rice, which she prepared for dinner. When Graham returned home, upon seeing the meal, threw the pots outside. The complainant, according to prosecutors, started crying and went into a room where Graham followed her and began beating her, which caused a wound that bled.

However, Graham denied the allegations and told the court that it was him who actually cooked the meal.

“Your Honour, a me cook the mackerel and rice and me lef and go pon the road and come back home and see the empty pot dem. She start cuss me and say how me stay outta road so late and me just fling down the pot,” he recounted.

“She did fi gwan long time too cause dah gal love her belly too much,” Graham said further, causing stifled laughter from persons in the courtroom.

The investigator informed the court that he tried making contact with the complainant, who was absent from court, but his efforts proved futile.

“She moved in with you in October and by December you guys break off? That’s the honeymoon stage,” the senior jurist said.

The matter was adjourned until January 30,2024 for the complainant to attend.
