Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott could be donning the star helmet for the last time in 2024. It’s not set in stone, and things could all change by the time the 2024 season approaches; however, as things stand, Prescott is preparing for this upcoming season to be his last with the Cowboys.
The quarterback acknowledged that fact when speaking to reporters from the Children’s Cancer Fund Gala on Friday. The Athletic’s Jon Machota shared the news in his latest piece.
“I’m not going to say I fear being here or not. I don’t fear either situation, to be candid with you,” Prescott said Friday from the Children’s Cancer Fund Gala. “I love this game and love to play and love to better myself as a player and my teammates around me. Right now it’s with the Dallas Cowboys, it’s where I want to be, and that’s where I am, and that’s the focus. And after the season, we’ll see where we’re at and if the future holds that. And if not, we’ll go from there.”
While the Cowboys and Prescott’s camp were optimistic about a long-term extension, negotiations have not made any recent progress. The Cowboys have previously said they would not let the 30-year-old quarterback hit free agency. However, owner, general manager, and president Jerry Jones have yet to make a move, and Prescott’s not guaranteed to play in Dallas beyond 2024.

The three-time Pro Bowler is entering the final year of the four-season, $160 million contract he signed in 2021. He was confident he and the Cowboys would get a deal done in March. A month later, the tone has certainly changed drastically.
Still, if talks start to arise, whenever they will be, Prescott revealed he will leave it up to his team to get the job done.
“Honestly, I’m focused on the moment, on the now,” Prescott said. “If the talks begin and real talks get to happen, sure, we can talk about getting that done, but in this case right now I’m worried about getting better, being better than I am at this moment. So leaving that up to my agent and Jerry at this point.”
The former Offensive Rookie of the Year is coming off a stinker of a performance in the 2024 NFC Wild Card game against the Green Bay Packers. The Cowboys went out sad and got destroyed by the seventh-seeded Packers, 48-32. Still, Prescott’s 2023 season was the best in his career. He completed a career-high 410 completions, completed 69.5% of his passes, threw for a career-high 36 touchdown passes, and passed for 4,516 total yards, the second-most in his career.
It’ll be difficult to see Prescott with a team other than the Cowboys, but this NFL draft and this offseason could tell us a lot about where Dallas wants to go. Don’t listen to what they say. See what they do.
