Customers leave touching messages for Wilko staff in Swansea as store set to close

Customers of a popular store in Swansea are leaving touching messages for staff as the store gets set to close in a week’s time. Wilko is closing its stores in phases nationwide, and its branch in Swansea city centre will officially close its doors for good on Sunday, October 8.

Wilko, which was owned by the founding Wilkinson family for decades, collapsed into administration in August. HMV owner Doug Putman had planned to buy 300 branches and keep them running after Wilko went into administration in August, but then announced he could no longer follow through with the purchase process for having “worked with administrators and suppliers over several weeks to seek a viable way to rescue it as a going concern”. The full list of stores set to close can be found by clicking here.

Huge discounts are now on offer at the store as it prepares for its final days, with 70% off gardening items, 60% off DIY items, 50% off stationary, and at least 40% off everything else. The upstairs to the store has now been cordoned off and all that is left is what remains on the ground floor, with its aisles and shelves quickly being left bare as shoppers slowly but surely clear it of its cut priced stock. At the entrance to the store is a writing board which reads: “We would like to announce this Wilko store will be closing on Sunday, October 8. We would like to thank you for your loyalty and custom. Thank you. Swansea team.” And in a touching move, customers have penned their own messages over the written announcement expressing their disappointment at the news, and their gratitude to staff who have worked there over the years.

A selection of the messages read: “Such a lovely shop, will be sad to see it close”, “Such a shame, will miss the cafe and shop very much. Good luck to you all”, and “Will miss you all, especially Michelle, Kevin and Kelly(s).” Another message reads: “I’m so sorry, Wilko has been a staple of Swansea. I will really miss it. Best of luck to everyone.”

Another message offers a bit of positivity to staff, reading: “Sad to see you go. All the best to you all, brighter days are coming.” Other city centre shops have signed the board expressing their well-wishes, including Sam’s Cafe and Boots, whilst another customer writes: “Best service in town. Wish you all the best.”
