Dancehall star Rygin King wants help for Jamaicans with disabilities

Dancehall artiste Rygin King says he’s seeking the assistance of the public to help persons living with disabilities who are in need of support in Jamaica.

The deejay, whose real name is Matthew Smith, said he also plans to start an official charity project in the future.

It will be geared towards raising funds to send wheelchairs and other items for such persons with disabilities living in the country, according to King, who was speaking to his followers in an Instagram video on Tuesday.

Since being shot during an attack in Westmoreland in 2020, King, now paralysed, is wheelchair-bound.

The dancehall star, who shot to fame with his breakout hit ‘Tuff’, said his decision to seek assistance for disabled persons was due to many of them, particularly those confined to a wheelchair, reaching out to him.

“Public announcement… Mi ago need unuh help… A lot a people inna di wheelchair community a reach out to mi and a seh, ‘Yow dem wah supply’,” King said.

The St James native said such persons would also be in need of financial assistance.

“But watchya nuh, mi alone can’t do it…, because mi realise a whole heap a DM (direct messages) from dem… Mi can’t save everybody, but at least mi can ask fi help fi help dem,” King said.

He then shared his idea to start a charity to provide items, such as wheelchairs, pampers, and urinals, to those Jamaicans living with disabilities.

King explained that due to his own expenses, which include physiotherapy and caring for his children, he cannot assist everyone on his own.

“Mi get up this morning and mi heart willing but mi flesh weak, so mi a beg unuh. Anyway, somebody, if unuh see di message out deh and unuh can help me, send me a DM weh mi can find how mi can get this together the right way,” the artiste pleaded.

In May of 2020, King was driving his car in Ashton, Westmoreland when gunmen started shooting at his vehicle. He was shot, along with a woman and a male passenger.

Following the incident, King kept a low profile until 2022 when he finally acknowledged publicly that he was paralysed.

Aside from ‘Tuff’, King is known for dancehall hits like ‘Therapy’, ‘No Emotion’, ‘Mission’, ‘Pop Mi Collar’, and ‘How Me Grow’.
