A TORY MP has revealed how vile death threats drove him to the brink of suicide.

Elliot Colburn says a stream of hatred plunged him into a spiral of anxiety and
deep depression.

Last month, he spoke in the Commons at Prime Minister’s Questions of his attempt to kill himself. But he has now decided to talk more openly about it, and believes his decision to go public may have saved someone’s life.

Mr Colburn, 31-year-old MP for Carshalton and Wallington, said: “My relationships at home, my relationships at work all started to crumble. They all became really difficult. And I began isolating myself.

“I had a number of death threats come through that year. They were new to me at that time. And all of this just fed into this
awful thought cycle and culminated in a night in December.”

Mr Colburn said he came to believe he was “unwanted” by the other people in his life.

He said: “I took out my notepad from my bag. I wrote a goodbye message and tried to do something really stupid. I’m glad it didn’t work. That’s all I can say. I am really glad.”

After being checked at a local A&E he was sent to Springfield University Hospital in south London, which helps patients with mental health issues.

He told GB News: “It was scary. I never, ever want to go back to that place.”

Mr Colburn said that speaking about his trauma had a positive impact. His staff received a call from someone who had changed their mind about a suicide bid.

The MP said: “He had said he was planning to take his own life that day. He’d made that decision. He’d been brought to that low point but saw the Prime Minister’s Questions. He decided to start his recovery journey and get in contact with a professional to try to get help.”

Mr Colburn said he chose to tell of his own experience after realising that many constituents appeared to have mental health issues.

“It seemed to be a feature of quite a lot of what I do on a day to day basis,” he said.
