The Delhi International Airport management on Friday (June 28) said that it set up a Technical Committee to probe the cause of the roof collapse at Terminal 1 of the airport that killed one person and injured several others.
“Due to heavy rains and winds through the night in Delhi, a Canopy at the old departure forecourt of Terminal 1 (T1) partially collapsed around 5 am this morning. While the cause for the collapse is being assessed, the primary cause seems to be the continued heavy rainfall over the past few hours,” a DIAL spokesperson released a statement saying.
“As per the Indian Meteorological Department, Delhi Safdarjung recorded massive 228.1mm of rains in the last 24 hours (mainly in the early morning hours of today). This is the highest 24-hour rain in Delhi in June after 1936, the average rainfall in the area in last 30 years is 75.2 mm,” the statement said.

The Delhi airport spokesperson said that in the incident four vehicles were damaged and eight people received minor injuries and were immediately provided medical assistance.
He said that the Delhi airport announced a compensation of Rs 20 Lakh to the family of the deceased and Rs 3 Lakh to the ones who were injured in the roof collapse.
“As a precautionary measure, all flight operations from Terminal 1 have been suspended till further notice and rescheduled by the respective Airlines to operate from Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, till the impacted areas are restored for operations,” the DIAL spokesperson said.
“A Technical Committee has been formed by DIAL to investigate the cause of the incident and will give the report as soon as possible. In addition, DIAL is working with all relevant agencies to assess the situation and restore operations,” the statement added.
